Just Arrived in Japan? Do These 6 Things First 🇯🇵
Moving to Japan can feel overwhelming, especially during your first few days. To help you settle smoothly, here is a step-by-step checklist every international student and new resident must follow after arriving in Japan.
1.Clear Immigration & Get Your Zairyu Card
After landing in Japan, complete immigration procedures at the airport. You will receive your Zairyu Card (Residence Card), which is your most important identification document in Japan. Always keep it with you.
2. Check the Back of Your Zairyu Card (Work Permission)
Check whether your card states permission to work:
「原則週28時間以内・風俗営業等の従事を除く」
✔ You can work up to 28 hours per week during school terms
✔ Up to 40 hours during holidays
❌ Nightclubs, bars, gambling, and adult-related jobs are strictly prohibited
3. Get a SIM Card or Pocket Wi-Fi
Staying connected is essential for maps, communication, school updates, and emergencies. Choose a SIM card or pocket Wi-Fi soon after arrival for easy internet access.
4. Register Your Address at the Ward Office
Within 14 days of moving in, visit your local ward/city office to register your address.
Bring:
- Zairyu Card
- Passport
This step is mandatory for all residents in Japan.
5. Open a Bank Account
A Japanese bank account is required to:
- Receive part-time job salaries
- Pay rent and utility bills
- Manage daily expenses
Some banks may require school documents and residence proof.
6.Apply for National Health Insurance
Japan’s National Health Insurance (NHI) covers most medical expenses and reduces healthcare costs significantly.
Apply at your ward office after address registration.
